![]() October 20, 1941 - July 17, 2010 An icon was lost today in the Taylor Machine Works family with the passing of William Metts, Director of Marketing for over 38 years. From his early beginnings more than 51 years ago as a service man taking care of Taylor customers throughout the Southeast, William’s expert knowledge of the Taylor products, his infectious attitude of positive thinking, and his "get the job done no matter what it takes" spirit led him into the Taylor sales organization soon thereafter. Among many of William’s career accomplishments, he led the company through its formative years as head of Sales and Service during the strategic transition from an Agricultural and Forestry equipment manufacturer into the big lift material handling giant Taylor is known for today. William also carried out the strategic plan for the company in establishing a top flight sales organization as well as developing the best big lift material handling dealer network the industry has ever seen. His tireless commitment to the customer led the company to coin its sudden service philosophy into a corporate moniker with the establishment of Sudden Service, Inc. William’s amazing analytical ability of assessing equipment wear and tear led him to become an industry expert in the field of lift equipment residual values thus developing a sound after market equipment valuation methodology for the company and competitors alike. There has never been a better forklift salesman than William Metts. He will be greatly missed by the Big Red Team and especially his loving Taylor - Metts family. An exciting new XC Series of cushion tire industrial trucks has been introduced by Taylor Machine Works, Inc. of Louisville, Mississippi. These powerful cushion tire trucks are manufactured for productivity; they provide significant lift capacities in a remarkably compact space and are specifically designed for applications with limited maneuvering space plus significant heavy lift requirements. The six XC models provide lifting capacities of 18,000 to 35,000 pounds at 24 inch load centers on 56 inch wide all-welded chassis. The XC chassis are built on three wheel bases: 80 inch for the 18,000, 20,000, and 22,000 pound capacities; 88 inches for the 25,000 and 30,000 pound capacities; and 98 inch for the 35,000 pound capacity truck. With the exception of the XC-350L, width over tires is 56.5 inches; over tire width for the XC-350L is 60.5 inches. The cast counterweight features single-bolt mounting for ease of service. Standard engine for the XC Series is a GM 5.7 liter, 125 Hp, V8 LPG model. It is a propane gas injected, low emission engine with a oxy catalytic converter. (A Cummins 4.5 110Hp, Tier IIIturbocharged, charged air cooled diesel engine is available as an option.) The LPG engine muffler is mounted to the engine with exhaust directed through the rear of the truck. Standard is a CANbus engine diagnostic unit providing information to the dash-mounted display panel. The 3-speed, fully reversing, powershift transmission includes inching and electric roll shift. Automatic Powershift Control is standard. The drive axle has wet disc brakes. The wet disc service brakes are internally force-cooled, hydraulically actuated. Taylor Machine Works, leading manufacturers of materials handling equipment, has extended its range of reach stackers to include the new TS-9972 Reach Stacker, which offers enhanced performance, improved safety, reduce maintenance requirements, an increased operational life, and cost efficiency. For over 80 years, Taylor has listened to the needs of their customers and responded with the manufacturing of unique equipment meeting customers’ needs and expectations. “Taylor, which is a family owned business based in Louisville, Mississippi, has over 80 years experience in the manufacturing material handling equipment. The company has designed and manufactured an extensive range of equipment - including loaded and empty mast type container handlers, reach stackers and rough terrain forklifts - to meet the exact requirements of its global customer base,” says Lex Taylor, CEO, Taylor Machine Works. “What is unique about the new TS-9972 reach stackers is that after sitting down face to face and discussing feature requests of reach stacker customers, this series boasts a one-million cycle lifetime, which exceeds others in the industry. This means a maintenance savings to the customer over the life of the reach stacker.” The TS-9972 unit is able to stack 9.5 foot containers (up to 99,000 lbs.) four high in the first row. At the fifth position in the first row, capacity is 90,400 lbs. Second row capacity is 72,000 lbs. up to four high. In the third row, containers weighing up to 32,500 lbs. can be stacked three high. The TS-9972 reach stacker features a Taylor newly designed telescopic spreader attachment which can be hydraulically adjusted to handle containers with 20-ft and 40-ft ISO twistlock placement. This spreader attachment includes hydraulic side shift and slew, as well as mechanical pile slope adjustments. Twin Hydraulic motors and brakes enable 95° counter-clockwise and 185° clock-wise rotation and allow for much improved torque control and system redundancy. These unique design features separate control of the spreader cylinders, giving the operator greater maneuverability, which results in quicker lift cycles. This design also allows easy access to hydraulic cylinders, valves, hoses, and electrical components, allowing for quicker preventative maintenance and service diagnostics. No components are hidden within the attachment structure. Wear pads are also easily accessed from the outside. The telescopic boom, which is constructed from high-strength steel, is designed to provide the fatigue resistance necessary for heavy-duty reach stacker operations. Oversized wear pads, rotate bearings and gearings, as well as full penetration welds, ensure extended service life. A load moment indicator, in conjunction with accurate laser technology to read boom precise position, replaces previous technologies and is standard in the TS-9972 series. Also a boom angle and boom extension indicator are part of the electronic system and control precise vertical lift in one single joystick movement. These reach stackers are powered by a Cummins 335-hp electronic, turbocharged aftercooled, Tier III certified diesel engine. Other features of this series include a four-speed electronic, full reversing, modulated transmission with a standard automatic powershift control; a high-stability, wide-stance planetary drive axle bolted to the frame and a single-cylinder design steer axle, with fully sealed wheel bearings that do not require adjusting. A 24-volt electrical system, equipped with the TICS (Taylor Integrated Control System) is standard, providing a safe, reliable, and very simplistic operation in any application. TICS utilizes J1939 CANbus technology for accurate control and diagnostics and for operator convenience, data is clearly displayed on a dash-mounted full-color display screen. Adjustments to the TICS system can be made in the field by local, trained service personnel. This is a major benefit for the smooth operation and reliability of the TS-9972. The all-steel, welded cab can be hydraulically moved forward or backward for easy access to engine, transmission, radiator and pumps, allowing for quicker maintenance checks. This results in minimal downtime. Oversized windows and a T-shaped dashboard, provide excellent visibility for the operator. A low-effort joystick which is mounted on a large and easily adjustable armrest, provides easy control of lift/lower, boom-in/boom-out, attachment rotation and twistlock operation functions. These ergonomic advantages provide a more comfortable, stress free environment, allowing the operator to concentrate on the task at hand.
